Golden Barrel Cactus (Echinocactus grusonii)
The Golden Barrel Cactus is a classic desert beauty, instantly recognizable for its round, ribbed body lined with golden-yellow spines. Often nicknamed the “mother-in-law’s cushion,” it’s one of the most iconic and sculptural cacti, making a bold statement whether grown alone in a pot or as part of a desert-themed display. Mature plants may even produce striking yellow flowers in summer.
Care Tips:
☀️ Light: Needs full sun to thrive—perfect for the brightest window or outdoors in warm months
💧 Water: Very drought tolerant; allow soil to dry out completely between waterings
🌫 Humidity: Loves dry air; avoid high humidity
❄️ Temperature: Keep above 50°F; protect from frost (cold hardy outdoors only in very warm climates)
🐾 Pet Friendly: No (spines are sharp, and plant tissue can be toxic if ingested)
Fun Fact: In the wild, Golden Barrels can grow up to 3 feet tall and just as wide, but as houseplants they usually stay compact, making them perfect sculptural accents. Sadly, they’re endangered in their native Mexico due to habitat loss—but cultivated specimens are widely available for plant lovers. 🌵✨
