Rose of Jericho
Rose of Jericho (Selaginella lepidophylla)
Rose of Jericho, also known as the Resurrection Plant, is one of the strangest little plants around. When dry, it curls tightly into a brown, seemingly lifeless ball. Add water, and the fronds gradually unfurl and turn green again, making it a fascinating plant to watch come back to life.
Unlike a traditional houseplant, it doesn't need to stay in soil or water continuously. It actually benefits from regular dry periods between displays.
Care Tips:
☀️ Light: Bright, indirect light, avoid harsh direct sun
💧 Water: Place the roots or base in a shallow dish of water to allow it to open, avoid completely submerging the plant
🌫 Humidity: Average household humidity is fine
❄️ Temperature: Comfortable household temperatures are ideal, protect from extreme heat and cold
🏜️ Dry Period: Remove from water regularly and allow it to dry and curl back up, don't leave it sitting in water indefinitely
🐾 Pet Friendly: Generally considered non-toxic, but it's best to prevent pets from chewing on it
⭐ Rare: Yes
Fun Fact:
Rose of Jericho can survive extreme dehydration by curling into a dormant ball, then unfurl again when water returns. It can repeat this process over and over, which is how it earned the nickname Resurrection Plant. 🌿💧
